Clinical Assistant (Social Skills & Assessment Support)

Part-time · Non-exempt (W-2) · $30/hour (up to $35) · San Jose campus plus Greater Bay observations · Rolling start

About Thrive

Thrive Collaborative is a practice built by clinicians, for clinicians. We provide expert special education assessment and consultation to California schools and families, and we have designed Thrive to be the kind of place we always wanted to work.

For you, that means real flexibility and autonomy over your schedule, genuine room to grow as a professional, and a small team that feels like family. It also means a stake in our success: Thrive shares its profits with the team, and every employee gets visibility into how the company is doing, so you can bring an owner’s mindset and share in what you help build.

The Role

As a Clinical Assistant, you help Thrive deliver hands-on support to students across two kinds of work. Each week you lead a small in-person social skills group at a San Jose campus for late-elementary and middle-school students, helping kids build the social and emotional skills they need to thrive. You run the group under the supervision of a BCBA, with curriculum, training, and support provided. You do not need a separate license or credential for this role; you will always work under the supervision of our credentialed clinicians.

You also support our assessment work by conducting student observations for psychoeducational evaluations and functional behavior assessments, under the supervision of the Lead school psychologist or BCBA. These happen at schools across the Greater Bay Area (San Francisco, Oakland, and nearby), so some willingness to travel is a plus, and we cover travel beyond a normal 30-mile commute. It is a flexible, part-time role: roughly 1.5 hours on campus each week plus a few hours of virtual preparation and training each month (more at first, less as you settle in), with additional observation hours as you are able.

Who Thrives Here

This role is built for someone early in their journey in psychology, education, or behavior work who wants real, hands-on experience and room to grow. You are genuinely good with kids and light up working with them. You take direction well, follow through, and show up reliably every week, because a small group of students is counting on you. You also represent Thrive well on campus, building positive relationships with the school staff and families you work alongside.

You are curious, eager to learn, and excited to build a career in this field. If that sounds like you, you will fit right in.

What You’ll Do

  • Leading a weekly in-person social skills group for late-elementary and middle-school students at a San Jose campus, under the supervision of a BCBA.
  • Preparing for sessions and completing virtual training and check-ins each month (heavier at first, lighter as the year settles).
  • Conducting student observations for psychoeducational assessments and functional behavior assessments, under the supervision of the Lead school psychologist or BCBA, when available.
  • Collecting and recording observation data accurately and on time.
  • Traveling to school sites across the Greater Bay Area for observations as available (travel beyond a 30-mile commute is paid).
  • Collaborating with your supervising clinicians and following their guidance to deliver consistent, high-quality support.

What We’re Looking For

  • A bachelor’s degree in psychology, child development, education, applied behavior analysis, social work, or a related field; or current enrollment in a counseling, school psychology, or special education graduate or practicum program.
  • At least 2 years of experience working with school-age children.
  • Genuinely great with kids, coachable, and reliable week to week.
  • A real interest in building a career in psychology, education, or behavior support.
  • Willingness to be on campus in San Jose weekly, with reliable transportation, and openness to occasional travel across the Greater Bay Area for observations.

Nice to have

  • Experience facilitating social skills groups or delivering behavior or social-emotional curricula.
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English).

What We Offer

  • Flexibility. Part-time, flexible scheduling that fits around your life, including the freedom to keep a private practice or work with other organizations. We ask for availability during school hours but don’t dictate your daily hours.
  • Growth. Monthly workgroups and shared learning within a practice that keeps investing in better tools and methods.
  • Culture. A small, supportive work family. Collaboration by choice, autonomy with minimal oversight, and honest reflection.
  • Ways to grow and earn. Transparent pay and multiple paths to expand your role and your earnings over time.

We Grow Together, Always. Lifelong growth as professionals and humans, shared wisdom, monthly workgroups, and honest reflection.
Serve with Heart. Deeply impactful, collaborative care that transforms lives, far beyond transactional models.
We Choose Freedom, We Choose Flow. Work designed for fulfillment and balance, flexible schedules, chosen collaborations, and real autonomy.

Compensation

This is a part-time, non-exempt (W-2), hourly position.

You are paid your hourly rate for all time worked, including the weekly group, preparation and training, and any assessment observations. This is a direct-service role, so it is paid hourly rather than through Thrive’s per-assessment project-pay model.

Hourly rate: $30/hour, up to $35 for an exceptional candidate, based on experience.
  • Travel: paid for any travel beyond a normal 30-mile commute when you take on observation work.
  • Profit-share bonus: Thrive shares 20% of company profits with the team. Your share is based on your performance metrics and the volume you deliver. This profit share is committed annually and paid at year-end; when budgets allow, it may be paid twice a year.

Final rate is confirmed in your offer letter, based on your experience.

How to Apply

Applying takes one step. Complete a single short form with your resume, a brief video (about two to three minutes) answering two role-specific prompts, and a quick survey. It should take about 20 to 30 minutes total, and you have up to five days to finish once you begin. We read every application and will be in touch either way.
